The Dojos

Kanzen’s first official Dojo Opened in 1974 in “The Firehouse” on Rt.79 in Marlboro NJ.  Since Kanzen was never about making money, Zoku needed to move the Dojo various times to locations where rent was low enough to keep the Dojo going.  After the Firehouse,  the Dojo then had to move to a Jewish Synagog in Sayerville NJ.  From there, a back room was rented at the YMCA in Freehold NJ.  After the YMCA, Kanzen found it’s home at 3 West Main Street, Freehold NJ.

When the Dojo moved to 3 West Main Street in the early 1980’s, Freehold Boro NJ was not like today.  There was allot of gang activity, storefront break-ins, a handful of gang shootings etc.  But this was Kanzen’s first home that was not rented by the hour. Zoku had an office where his years of accolades and diplomas were hung.  The Dojo walls were decorated with weapons and signs.  The warm up room had a wall of makiwara.  And in the middle of the dojo wall was a giant painting of the Kanzen patch.

Every Karateka keeps memories of the various Dojo’s they train.  For those of us that trained at 3 West Main….it was a very special Dojo.

This is the weather beaten sign that hung outside the Dojo, crooked patch and all.
